2022.01.27 05:00 avocadothanksssss Getting to know my body again after 1 dose.

I don’t know if it’s all in my head from reading so much/fighting against this. But I got my first vaccine because I’m in the military and was very pressured to do so. Ever since I’ve had adverse reactions/ just weird things going on with my body. Main thing was I had abnormal uterine bleeding for about 5-6 days and intense cramping pain after first vaccine and I was being told it could be from anything. I let it go and refused to get another dose. Ever since I’ve had weird palpitations at times. I had an intense pulse in my stomach on the left side for 7 hours one day and no medical staff knew what it was. Sometimes my heart is racing at night and I can’t fall asleep because it freaks me out. Haven’t been sick in about 4 years but 2 months after the Covid vaccine, I suddenly got Covid. Which makes me feel like the vaccine made my immune system be less effective (since I hadn’t contracted Covid the entire pandemic and never got sick even before the pandemic for almost 2 years). Anyway, I still have painful cramps a couple days a week and abnormal spotting that has not gone away. And still have random palpitations/ racing HR randomly more often when I’m trying to fall asleep. 24 year old fit and healthy female. The one dose I got was Pfizer

2022.01.27 05:00 LaDeckard 840 Miles Of Coast

Russell and I are both from a tiny town called Lebanon in Northern Kansas, where we were both born and raised. Fun fact, located about 2.6 miles from Lebanon is the geographic centre of the 48 contiguous United States, meaning that they were the furthest from the coast anywhere in the US and had never seen the coast before. We had never left our home state before, so our trip west was both exciting and nerve-wracking.
As we boarded our plane, we both talked anxiously at the airport. Flying was also a first for both of us, so as we lifted off, we both gazed out the little window at the land below us. As the plane accelerated, our guts lurched into our spines, and we nervously laughed as soon as the plane took off since we didn't know what else to do. Soon the plane began to straighten, and we began to relax once we reached the correct height.
I said, "Man, I'm a little scared about swimming in the water..."
"What are you afraid of? Sharks?" Russell said as he burst out laughing.
"Yes, of course...Aren't you, haven't you seen those documentaries?" I said as I shrugged.
"Dude, being attacked by a shark has about as much probability of happening as this plane crashing!" Russell said, adding more to my terror.
"Seriously! Please don't jinx us, dude!" I blurted, which made Russell laugh even louder.
I shook my head and put on the headphones, putting on a movie to calm myself down. I knew Russell was anxious as well; he was only putting on a strong face. I could see he was nervous by his constant finger tapping. I probably shouldn't have mentioned my fear of sharks since I'm afraid I may have jinxed us.
I managed to doze off for a few hours, so the following several hours flew by. Russell shook my shoulder and jolted me awake.
"Dude, we're about to land!" He was nearly yelling as he spoke.
I leapt to my feet and gazed out the small window, watching as the incredibly blue ocean drew closer as we approached the landing strip.
"Wow, this is California, I can see why it's called the Golden State, this place is literally all beaches!" I was ecstatic, Russell just nodded enthusiastically, a broad grin on his face.
As the plane touched down, the scent of the sea flooded my nostrils. I had heard of how wonderful the ocean was, but when we stepped off the plane, it smelled a lot worse than I expected. It was a strong salty odour, much like swamp water combined with hundreds of pounds of salt.
"Dude, that smells!" Russell yelled as covered his nose with his palm and waved it in front of his face.
"You'd better get used to it, buddy, we're here for a week!" As I retrieved my bag from over my head, I smacked him on the back.
I realize that a week isn't much of a vacation, but it was all Russell, and I could obtain from our grumpy old boss. I'm surprised he allowed us both to take it at the same time because we worked the same shift at the Smith County hospital. I want to imagine our boss is a big fat softy underneath all those scowls and lectures, but he's probably just bored of watching our miserable figures mope about all day, so he let us leave to cheer up and go back to work.
It was after 4 p.m. when we picked up our vehicle rental and booked into our hotel, and we were both exhausted, for we had essentially travelled half the country. We decided to just get something to eat from the vending machine and go to bed, with the intention of heading to the beach first thing the next morning. We could rent a board and buy inexpensive snorkels from a shop directly on the beach. With a plan in place for the next morning, we were able to get some much-needed rest.
Our alarms went off at 7:00 a.m., and we both leapt out of bed enthusiastically. We changed into our newly acquired wetsuits and bolted from the hotel. We spoke enthusiastically about which marine creatures we wanted to see as we drove to the beach, which was only a 5-minute drive away.
We were surprised to discover the shop was closed until 8:00 a.m. when we arrived at the beach. We simply brushed it off and went swimming till it reopened. We jogged up to the water's edge and used our toes to check the temperature.
"Holy, it's so warm!" I couldn't believe how warm the water was.
"Wow, this is incredible..." Russell said as he gazed out across the water, "How could water be so warm?"
I followed his eyes, and the amount of water in front of us was both beautiful and scary, it seemed to go on forever before us. My heart began to flutter when I noticed activity a few hundred yards away.
"Dude, what's that out there?" I said, Fear dripping from my voice.
"Uh uh, what was it?" Russell’s voice was filled with apprehension, a grey hairy creature burst out of the water for a fraction of a second before plunging back below.
"Dude, I think that’s a seal!" At the same instant, we both yelled at one another in glee.
We smiled as we watched as more and more seals emerged and then dived back below, leaving magnificent splashes in their wake. To gain a better perspective, we moved a little farther into the water until we were approximately chest deep. I recall being surprised at how far out we had to travel to attain even chest-deep water. With each passing second, my confidence grew, and the seals appeared unconcerned.
We heard a loud clattering behind us after seeing the seals play and they eventually approached us, getting within a few dozen yards of us to check us out. We turned back to find the shop's door open, Russell and I exchanged glances and began walking back to the beach. We returned to our car, grabbed the rented Board’s, snorkels and flippers, and swam out as quickly as we could so we could get a closer look at the seals.
We attempted to balance on our boards once we were back in the water, but it took a few tries. It was more difficult than it appears. We both managed to stay upright after a few minutes and began paddling out further and further. We were delighted to see the seals still leaping around, and we paddled right up to them, oblivious to the potential hazards of approaching wild creatures.
We kept paddling, but it felt as if we were never getting any closer to the seals, as if they were always just out of reach.
After a few minutes, Russell yelled out to me, "Dude...." My heart began to pound in my chest as I stopped paddling. My mind went into panic mode right away, and I turned to Russell for answers.
"I believe the seals were swimming further out and we were unaware of it..." Russell made a gesture behind me.
As I followed where he was pointing, my adrenaline went into overdrive as I saw how far we were from the beach, I let out a loud gasp as it dawned on me. We had to be at least 100 yards from the coast, far enough away that our car appeared as a small black speck in the distance.
"Holy crap, we have to go back!" I screamed as I struggled to turn my board around, which proved to be more difficult than I anticipated.
"Wait! Shut up dude!" His eyes were as big as saucers as he put his finger to his lips. There was no sound at all and it was rather spooky because there was no sound.
I shrugged my shoulders, unsure of what he had heard.
"What happened to the seals?" Russell said, his comments smacked me in the face like a ton of bricks.
I could no longer hear the splashing and playful sounds the seals had been making, and I couldn't see them, either. It was eerily silent. My own heart was pounding violently in my chest as the only thing I could hear. I could tell Russell was as uncomfortable as I was just by looking at him.
"Let's get out of here, that's enough ocean for today." He said angrily, his fingers white from clenching his knuckles so tightly.
Something didn't seem right, and I felt completely exposed and vulnerable, I didn't need to be warned again. We paddled as swiftly and softly as we could without toppling over, which was tough given that neither of us had ever paddled before. We had just gone a few yards when I heard a faint splash from behind me. My entire body froze, and chills prickled up and down my spine. Bubbles rippled the surface around 10 yards distant as I looked back to make sure I didn't topple.
Russell prayed beside me, "Please god, please, be seals or salmon..."
I went down on my hands and knees, put the goggles over my face, and stared into the water for some reason I still don't understand. The water was dark and green, and there were little bits of seaweed floating about, obstructing my eyesight. I anxiously glanced about, unable to see much owing to the murkiness of the water. It was deep, extremely deep, from what I could tell... As soon as I drew my head out of the water, Russell began barraging me with questions.
"What is it, man? Have you seen anything?"
I dipped my face back down and shook my head again, double-checking that we weren't in any danger. As soon as my head slid back under the water, I saw fangs right beneath me, followed by a gigantic shadow. A massive shark was passing around just a few feet beneath my feet... This monster was at least 25 feet long and had to weigh over 3000 pounds, and I'm not kidding. It was the biggest thing I'd ever seen, and it swam straight under me, its jaw slightly open, as if trying to get a better look at me. Those dark eyes, and those rows and rows of fangs, I'll never forget…
I pulled my head out of the water and began screaming uncontrollably.
"Shark! There's a huge shark!"
Due to my anxiety and worry, I began to lose my equilibrium, but I was able to regain it before falling into the water.
"What the hell!" Russell said as he let out a shriek.
As he peered over my shoulder behind me, his eyes opened, and the colour drained from his face. As this massive fin came out of the water only a few feet behind me, I nearly peed my wetsuit and I could see this massive black body just beneath the surface because it was so near.
Fearing for our lives, we both began paddling frantically towards the beach. This was a new level of terror for me, and I don't want to go through that again. I was absolutely and utterly despondent... Worse, we were both on black boards, dressed in black wetsuits, and we had the near exact appearance of seals... When I realized what we were up against, I didn't think about "if" it would attack, but rather "when" and "if" we could get away.
My heart sank into my gut as I turned to face Russell, the fin reappeared a few yards to his left and began racing towards him.
"Russell, get out!" I yelled. He leapt off his board towards me just as the shark's massive mouth opened and lunged towards Russell. The board snapped like a twig when the shark shook it fiercely in its teeth, and there was a big splash. Russell swam for his life as he rushed towards me. I knelt on my stomach while Russell crept up behind me, and we both began paddling with our arms and legs in an attempt to flee this monster. Behind me, Russell was crying uncontrollably and with a ray of optimism in my eyes, I looked up to find we were just a tiny bit closer to the beach.
"We're almost there!" I screamed, attempting to inspire optimism in Russell.
I looked back after Russell let out a bloodcurdling scream. The shark's jaw was wide open, and it looked like it could swallow any of us whole... It was close behind Russell, about to rip his legs apart, when he miraculously managed to kick it in the snout, driving us ahead.
We intensified our paddling, eager to put some space between ourselves and the monster.
Russell yelled behind me, "Faster, I'm not dying on my first trip to the sea!"
As I pushed my body to its limits, my arms and legs burned. We were only a few dozen yards from the coast when I noticed the sand beneath the waves. The fact that we were in considerably shallower water gave me one more surge of adrenaline, and I paddled harder than I thought possible.
"You're almost there!" I yelled with glee. Just then, I felt a strong tug behind me and let out a startled cry as Russell was yanked from the board.
"Nooo!" I shouted, and tears began to stream down my face.
Russell sprang up nearly 10 feet out of the water, his left leg caught in the shark's jaws. The shark breached the surface, and it was only then that I realized how massive this creature was. It was so large that it resembled a whale, and my dearest buddy was caught in its clutches... They both vanished back into the sea as quickly as they reappeared. With boiling water, a dark crimson began to emerge all around me. I looked in disbelief as I watched Russell go beneath the surface.
"Russell!" I yelled at the top of my lungs from the board.
Everything had returned to normal, and I had been left alone. My head was screaming at me to go back to the beach, but my legs and arms wouldn't move. Then, with a strong pull on the rear of my board, I was snapped out of it and began paddling fiercely once again. As my weary arms pushed me back to shore, my board felt like it weighed a hundred pounds.
"Uuhhh..." I jumped and spun around after hearing a faint groan from the rear of my board. I was absolutely taken aback when I saw Russell clutching the back of the board, blood dripping into the waist-deep water.
"Oh my gosh, Russell!" I exclaimed, relieved.
However, my delight was short-lived as I heard screams from the shore, "Get away from the water!"
I couldn't believe it as I glanced back out to sea. That massive shark fin was heading straight towards us. I grabbed Russell’s arm and dashed through the water as quickly as I could. I'm not sure how I got to the beach while dragging Russell’s near lifeless weight behind me.
When I arrived at the beach, my relief was short-lived as I examined Russell’s leg, or what was left of it. From the hip down, his right leg was gone, and he was bleeding blood quickly. His entire body was so white that he appeared to be a ghost, and his lips had become a faint bluish tint.
The beachgoers rushed up to us, anxiously attempting to assist us. To assist stop the bleeding, one man used his shirt as a tourniquet. Emergency personnel jogged up to us with a trolley, so someone must have phoned the ambulance while we were in the water. Everything appeared to be happening in slow motion, as if I were watching a movie, the horror gradually sinking in. Other than Russell being taken to the ambulance and then driving away, I don't recall anything else.
I spent the rest of the holiday in the hospital with Russell until he eventually woke up. I'll spare you the details because it was a very emotional experience. Russell expressed his gratitude excessively, but I couldn't help but feel terrible. I assumed he was no longer alive... I was completely unaware that he had re-grasped the board, and I swam away…
I couldn't stop myself from feeling guilty, and I still do…
It's been a few years, and both Russell’s and I are still suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of the attack. Even though I’m a thousand miles from the coast, every time I try to swim in body water, I envision those dark eyes and massive jaws gliding beneath me like they did that day in the ocean.
But I know now that leaving Lebanon, Kansas was a near fatal idea.

2022.01.27 05:00 dspeyer EA Forum Digest 27 Jan 2022

Examples of pure altruism towards future generations? I'm interested in any historical examples people have of altruistic actions taken primarily to benefit future generations, which don't have strong positive effects for current generations. (So e.g. most climate change mitigation efforts wouldn't count, if we expect climate change to have a big negative impact on people currently alive - but maybe some do?)
New Faunalytics' Study for Advocates Working on Chicken and Fish Welfare This crucial study not only uncovers what people in specific countries believe about chickens and fishes, but it also identifies which beliefs are associated with specific “animal-positive behaviors” — for example, willingness to reduce one’s chicken and fish consumption or sign a petition for welfare reform.
Read the full study here: www.faunalytics.org/chicken-and-fish-2
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, nearly 69 billion chickens were slaughtered in 2018 alone. That same year, fishes slaughtered worldwide weighed nearly 100 million tons. Many of the countries we have surveyed in this line of research—which were Brazil, Canada, China, India, and the United States—contribute in huge quantities to the enormous suffering of chickens and fishes. For example, China, the United States, and Brazil slaughtered more chickens than any other countries in 2018, with India not far behind. In terms of tons of fishes slaughtered, China ranked first in the world, while India was fourth and the U.S. was sixth. In total, the five countries considered in this research account for over 40% of the global chicken slaughter and more than a quarter of global fish slaughter.

Writing about my job: Operations Manager I’m fairly new to EA, and this is my first contribution to the forum, mostly because I didn’t feel particularly expert enough on any EA topic to weigh in. However, I’m not new to the world of ‘operations’ and have found that I’ve been approached by a variety of people who want a better understanding of what is meant by operations and help deciding if it would be a good career choice for them.
There has already been a bit of past discussion of ops on the forum; EA Norway’s posts do a great job of breaking down the skills needed, Eli_Nathan’s post shares some thoughts on alignment and personal fit and finally, this AMA post gets a bit more into the weeds for those who are more interested in some of the specifics. Also, this 80,000 Hours podcast is quite inspiring.

Why I am qualified to write this article
What would you say gives you a feeling of existential hope, and what can we do to inspire more of it? The EA community is to a large extent dedicated to identifying threats to human existence but very few offer guidance on what to aim for instead.
Currently I'm working with a team on a big re-design/re-purposing of this long dormant Existential Hope-website: https://www.existentialhope.com
As it is now the site is packed with content on what people have said gives them a feeling of existential hope. This can be everything from art to scientific research papers.
In re-doing the website, the current goal is to organize all of this content in a more intuitive/inviting way, to map the space of both peril and promise which lie before us and to create a flourishing hub that lists all major resources, projects and organizations in the Xhope/future-positive space with a monthly email digest of current opportunities, projects, progresses made, etc..

Should there be clearer disclosures of when individual staffers at EA-affiliated organizations are posting in a professional capacity? There is no problem with any individual who participates in EA discloses when they post or comment on the EA Forum that they are not speaking on behalf of their employer. Yet if the number of people from one organization making that disclosure keep increasing in a discussion, the value of those disclosures decreases. To take it to an absurd degree, the executive directors of EA-affiliated organizations would not be taken as seriously if they always disclosed they weren't speaking on behalf of their organization whenever they expressed an opinion.

On "intelligence traps" It is probably true that interesting problems are not necessarily (or rather, readily) important. Amanda Askell warns of "intelligence traps", which are a result of "glorified crossword puzzles". So the idea is that many people are working on problems that are interesting, but will categorically fail the importance test. I do not wish to disagree with this. I think it's a fair observation. However, some approaches to addressing this could lead to bad results. The almost obvious downside of the prescription finds relevance in fields like pure mathematics. I'm referring to problems that can only be justified of being studied aesthetically. These problems tend to turn out to be extremely useful in future times. And so I do not see how we are to advocate only for the study of problems whose importance is vivid and accessible. Another concern is the more general pitfall of promoting a culture of focusing solely on addressing what we get to recognize as important problems. Creative inquiry requires deeper, freer, and more comprehensive approaches to choosing problems to work on. I think it will be fruitful to start a discussion on this.

The Liberation Pledge Hey Team,Since publishing an article on the Liberation Pledge with the Journal for Critical Animal Studies last February, i've repeatedly been encouraged to share the article to the EA Forum. So here it goes:The Liberation Pledge entails a commitment to never eat alongside people consuming animal-based foods. In the article, i argue that the Liberation Pledge is an exceptionally effective tactic for individuals to challenge the diverse harms of Big Meat. Relatedly, i also argue that individual veganism absent the Liberation Pledge does little to affect change, and in some cases is counterproductive.Like my article, i'll spare you the justification for why curbing the harms of Big Meat is urgent and important (as i suspect most on the EA Forum are already familiar). From that assumed starting point, i invite readers to share feedback regarding the merits of the Liberation Pledge, and the argument i lay out to defend it. Copied below is the complete text (you can find the PDF here).

2022.01.27 05:00 dextersgenius Microsoft 365 Semi-Annual Feature Update for 2102 missing from the console

Hi all,
Is anyone else able to see the Feature Update for 2102 SAEC?
When I run a search for all feature updates, the only result I'm getting is for 2108.
I can see regular Quality updates for 2102, just not the Feature Update. 2102 should be supported till September 2022, so I don't think it would've dropped off?
Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

2022.01.27 05:00 ToadEnjoyer A complicated situation. Need some advice.

This story has a lot of layers, but I’ll try and keep it concise.
I (19M) am crushing pretty hard on this woman I know (19F). We met a couple months ago, through a mutual friend and I think we hit it off. We became good friends almost instantly, despite only ever really hanging out in person a few times, and always with a group. Anyways, this girl moved a few months ago very far away. I wasn’t expecting to see her again for a long time, but she changed her mind and is back in the area.
In the weeks leading up to her return, we started texting quite a bit. Just the silly stuff friends text. Nothing flirty, but the conversations were great, and for a while, we were talking almost everyday.
Now we’re both in the same place again for the first time in a while. The only problem? I haven’t been able to see her. I made plans to catch up with her and some of our friends, but one of our friends, the one who introduced us, has been seemingly trying to not let us hang out. She tries to be subtle, but she’s cancelled plans last minute on behalf of this girl I like several times and for a variety of fishy reasons. I really get the vibe that she doesn’t want me to hang out with her.
I’m very frustrated with my friend. I want to include her in plans, as she’s a close friend of mine and best friends with this girl I like (and she has a car), but I feel very disrespected. I don’t think she has the right to be the gatekeeper in this situation, and it’s really stressing me out. I want to confront her, but I don’t want to seem defensive, and I know she won’t respond well to it.
I just want to see this girl. We’re friends. I really like her, but now we don’t even really talk anymore. This whole situation had left me feeling confused and frustrated, and a little insecure and paranoid.
Any advice?
